NTU supports National Road Safety meeting in Pakistan

NTU supported the organization of the National Road Safety Steering Committee Meeting of Pakistan

The meeting was held on 26th February 2020, and a stepping stone for pushing forward improvements in Road Safety for Pakistan.

The main achievement of the meeting is the presentation of a Final draft model of the Road Safety Act which aims to update the regulatory frame for Road Safety in Pakistan. The Act was developed by the team of NTU Road Safety specialists in close coordination with the Ministry of Communications and other key authorities and ministries involved in the governance of Road Safety in the country.

Besides the efforts done on updating of the Road Safety legal framework, the National Road Safety Action Plan, 2020-2022 was also presented.  The action plan 2020-2022 is the first of three national plans that are intended to support the implementation of Pakistan’s National Road Safety Strategy 2018-2030 which was launched in Islamabad by the Honourable Murad Saeed, Federal Minister for Communications on 15th November 2018.

Each action plan will set out key actions for a four-year period.

The National Road Safety Action Plan, 2020-2022:

  • summarises the key issues for each focus area
  • sets out priority actions within each focus areas
  • sets performance targets for each focus area.

The Action Plan was developed in consultation with national and provincial agencies responsible for roads, transport, traffic enforcement and post-crash response. It was endorsed by the 4th meeting of the National Steering Committee for Road Safety Actions in Pakistan held on 26th February 2020.

National delivery of the actions set out in this Action Plan will ensure that road safety efforts are strategically focused to initiatives which are proven to deliver fatality reductions. Its implementation will save lives, reduce morbidity, and significantly improve road safety for all road users throughout Pakistan.
