SECTOR:
Transport

The transport sector plays an essential role in the world's society and economy. It has an immense impact on employment and growth. The transport sector affects all services in a country, impacts human lives and is a cornerstone for development.  However, it also comes with a tremendous toll on the environment. Transport accounts for about 64% of global oil consumption, 27% of all energy use, and 23% of the world's energy-related CO2 emissions.

Transport markets and related transport infrastructure networks are key drivers in the promotion of sustainable development, particularly by providing better access to employment and social services, and therefore improving accessibility and opportunities of the less developed regions or disadvantaged social groups. Sustainable transport is a critical element to foster inclusive growth, combat climate change and expand access to essential services. An efficient transport sector optimizes the transportation of goods and passengers, reducing the consumption of energy, land and resources. Likewise, a sustainable transport sector strives for safe and inclusive transport systems that reduce accidents and avoid congestion.

  • The transport industry directly employs around 10 million people and accounts for about 5% of gross domestic product (GDP).
  • On average, 13.2% of every household's budget is spent on transport goods and services.
  • Transport accounts for a quarter of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.
