On March 25-27, 2014 in Hamburg, NTU carried out a "Seminar on Ratification of Conventions, from Planning to Implementation" within the Project "TRACECA Maritime Safety and Security II". The main objectives of the workshop were: introduction of the ratification process; discussion on planning of a ratification, considering the impact of the new instrument on the maritime strategy and national legislation; legal and technical steps necessary for implementation; exchange of experience gained with the ratification and implementation of international instruments. The following topics and themes were presented and discussed during the workshop: •Who and how develops international maritime conventions? (UN, IMO, ILO...) •Why, when and how must international conventions be transferred into national law? •What does the IMO III Code say about implementation? (Maritime strategy, Pros and Cons, Integration in / Conflict with national legislation) •The national ratification process •Selected examples of implementation processes in different IMO member States • Lessons learnt from the IMO VIMSAS • Implementation of international conventions - focus on international liability conventions and the German approach On the 27th of March the Visit to the International Tribunal of the Law of the Seas was arranged, incl. presentation of the organization and work of the Tribunal and meeting with juridical representatives. The project covers Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey are associated. Two other workshops were organised within the framework of TRACECA Maritime in Georgia and Turkey in 2013-2014.
